At the beginning of the semester

In order to start working in our lab, you need to:
  1. Get a key. Please refer to the section keys in this document!
  2. Get a LDAP account. These will be issued at the beginnung of a project. Please refer to the section LDAP account in this document!
Please note that both, the key and the LDAP account, will only be issued at the beginning of the semester. By requesting a key and an account you acknowledge the following rules and guidelines for using our equipment!

Eating, Drinking, and Smoking

You are allowed to eat and drink in our lab. However, smoking is not allowed. Make sure you take your trash with you.

Keys

You will need a key to get access to the lab. Please make sure that you lock the lab if you are the last person to leave the lab. Especially in the evening and on the weekends, please make sure that you also lock the doors of the buildings (both B11 and HS7). You may request a key at the beginning of the semester. All keys need to be turned in at the end of the semester. You will be held accountable for the loss of your key. A project's certificates or grades are only issued when all keys are returned.

LDAP Account

To use our computers you need an LDAP account which you request at the beginning of the semester. You will also have a home directory on our server. It is only to be used for project specific files and data. When finishing a project your account and your home directory on our servers will remain for a certain period for you to remove your files and data. After that period they will be deleted.

Legal Issues

  • It's your full responsibility if you misuse any lab computers or equipments and will not be tolerated. It's also your responsibility to report any suspected misuse of equipment or software to us.
  • Hacking and inserting a virus into a computer inside or outside the lab are strictly forbidden as well as Deleting, altering, or damaging a computer or one of its components.
  • Lab computers and accounts are only for academic purposes and may not be used for business or private activities.
  • Unauthorized copying, distributing and or installing of unauthorized software is not permitted.
  • Unauthorized peer-to-peer file sharing is strictly forbidden. This includes, but is not limited to: music, pictures, movies, etc.
  • Sending messages attacking ethnic or religious groups or foreigners is strictly forbidden and will not be tolerated.

(Re-)Moving computers

You are not allowed to (re-)move any of the equipment without our permission!

The phone

The lab has its own telephone. Use it only for internal calls. If you need urgent help, please call Mirko Fetter at 3773.

Trash

Remove your trash immediately, not by the end of the week! Keep the lab clean!

Visitors and Friends

You may bring visitors and friends with you. However, you are responsible for them to follow the rules in this document.

VPN

Besides our equipment you are free to bring your own. Yet, your are responsible for it yourself!! Our lab offers VPN access. In order to obtain VPN access you need a client software. Please refer to the SCC's descriptionexternal link for setup.

Working hours

You have a key, so you are free to decide when to work. However, do not expect all services to run in the evening or at night since we need time ourselves for updates and maintenance. Stick to normal working hours!

At the end of the semester

Leave the lab clean, remove all your files and data from your home directory on our server, and return your key. No certificates or grades are issued unless the last projectmember has done so.
