The official librxtxSerial.jnilib of the RXTX-package does not provide support for Java 64-bit. Therefore to gain 64 bit support with RXTX, it is necessary to install a librxtxSerial.jnilib binary compiled with support for the 64 bit architecture (the provided unofficial librxtxSerial.jnilib supports 32 and 64 bit respectively intel and ppc).
In contrast to OS X 10.5, OS X 10.6 does not come with a /var/lock-folder by default. Because RXTX requires the lock-folder, you have to create one.

Follow these steps to install RXTX under OS X 10.6.8:
  • Download the official RXTX-package: rxtx-2.1-7-bins-r2.zip
  • Unzip the archive
  • Copy RXTXcomm.jar to /Library/Java/Extensions:
$:> cp Downloads/rxtx-2.1-7-bins-r2/RXTXcomm.jar /Library/Java/Extensions/

$:> cp Downloads/librxtxSerial.jnilib_32bit_64bit_intel_ppc/librxtxSerial.jnilib /Library/Java/Extensions/

  • Create the lock-directory with group 'uucp' ownership and set permissions:
$:> sudo mkdir /var/lock
$:> sudo chown :uucp /var/lock
$:> sudo chmod go+rw /var/lock
